Balan Nambiar has extensively documented, photographed and studied hundreds of ritual performances and art forms of the west coast of south India, such as Teyyam and Bhuta. Research papers and photographs by him were presented in various seminars and conferences and published in books, magazines and journals. Around 1800 of his photographs have been acquired by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, New Delhi.
